Plan Your VisitLake Mutirikwi (formerly Lake Kyle) is one of Zimbabwe's largest inland lakes, located southeast of Masvingo. Created between 1958 and 1960 after the construction of the Kyle Dam on the Mutirikwi River, the lake plays a vital role in supplying irrigation water to the agricultural estates of the Lowveld, especially sugar cane plantations.
The Mutirikwi Dam is a double-curvature concrete arch, measuring 309 metres in length and 63 metres in height. It remains one of the most significant pieces of water infrastructure in Zimbabwe and continues to support agriculture, recreation, and power generation.
Lake Mutirikwi is fed by several rivers, including:
Water levels fluctuate seasonally due to rainfall patterns and irrigation demand, often exposing large sections of shoreline during dry periods. The dam currently generates 5 MW of electricity with potential for future expansion.
The lake supports a diverse aquatic ecosystem with over 20 fish species, including largemouth bass, nembwe, various bream species, barbs, and catfish.
The surrounding environment features miombo woodlands, granite hills, thickets, and grasslands, creating a scenic natural landscape.
The lake's ecosystem is carefully managed to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of this important water resource.
While its primary role is irrigation, Lake Mutirikwi is also known for its stunning scenery. Visitors enjoy panoramic views from the granite hills that rise above the lake, as well as magnificent vantage points near the dam wall.
